Method
Preheat the Oven
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish or a similar-sized casserole dish.
Prepare the Green Beans
- If using fresh green beans, blanch them in boiling water for 3-4 minutes until tender-crisp, then drain and set aside.
- For frozen green beans, thaw and pat dry.
Mix the Sauce
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, milk, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper.
- Stir in the shredded cheese if using.
Assemble the Casserole
- Add the green beans to the sauce mixture and toss to coat.
- Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish.
- Top with 1 cup of the crispy fried onions.
Bake the Casserole
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes.
- Remove from the oven, sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of crispy fried onions on top, and bake for an additional 5 minutes, or until the onions are golden and the casserole is bubbling.
Serve
- Let the casserole cool for 5 minutes before serving.
