Ingredients
  

For the Green Bean Casserole
  • 1 lb fresh green beans trimmed and cut into 2-inch pieces (or 1 lb frozen green beans, thawed)
  • 1 can 10.5 oz condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup milk whole or 2%
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese optional, for extra creaminess
  • 1 1/2 cups crispy fried onions store-bought or homemade
Optional Add-Ins
  • 1/4 cup cooked crumbled bacon for a smoky twist
  • 1/2 cup sautéed mushrooms for added texture
Substitutions
  • Gluten-Free: Use gluten-free cream of mushroom soup and crispy onions.
  • Dairy-Free: Substitute milk with almond or oat milk and use a dairy-free condensed soup.

Method
 

Preheat the Oven
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish or a similar-sized casserole dish.
Prepare the Green Beans
  1. If using fresh green beans, blanch them in boiling water for 3-4 minutes until tender-crisp, then drain and set aside.
  2. For frozen green beans, thaw and pat dry.
Mix the Sauce
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, milk, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper.
  2. Stir in the shredded cheese if using.
Assemble the Casserole
  1. Add the green beans to the sauce mixture and toss to coat.
  2. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish.
  3. Top with 1 cup of the crispy fried onions.
Bake the Casserole
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes.
  2. Remove from the oven, sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of crispy fried onions on top, and bake for an additional 5 minutes, or until the onions are golden and the casserole is bubbling.
Serve
  1. Let the casserole cool for 5 minutes before serving.
